District Special Memorial Service @ Croydon Minster
District Special Memorial Service – 26/01/2019 Meeting We will at the front of the Church Hall in Church Street, (not directly outside the Minster to avoid congestion) between 13:30 and 13:45.   Parents and guardians can also join us and be party to the service in the Minster. Wear Please wear full Scout uniform (shirt, not the polo shirt). Finish and collection We will finish at 15:00. Full details. During 2018 there have been several notable occasions when organisations and communities up and down the County have celebrated the centenary of the ending of WW1 and of course not least recently on Remembrance Day – Sunday 11th November 2018. On this day in particular, members from Croydon Scouting turned out in strong  numbers right across the Borough to show our respects taking part in the main Croydon Civic Service as well as the many local community events and Parish services held across the Borough of Croydon. What many of our current members are probably unaware is that during WW1 – 66 members associated to Croydon Scout Troops gave their lives in conflict. We have a roll of Honour and the names of all 66 members who died. For instance: – Private: F H Beckett (Queens Westminster Rifles) who was killed in action in France 08/04/1917 and Private: Albert Garner (Australian Contingent) killed in action in Gallipoli in 1915 (Ex Patrol Leader). On Sunday 26th January 1919 a special Memorial Service was held at the former St Matthew’s Church, in College Road Croydon to remember those 66 Scouts from Croydon who gave their lives for King and County in the Great War. As you would imagine to mark this personal sacrifice made, the District we are holding a special Memorial Service 100 years to the day, to remember the 66 Scouts who died in WW1, and to those who have given their lives in conflict since. Therefore to confirm on Saturday 26th January 2019, we will be holding a special Memorial Service at Croydon Minster at 2:00pm. This service will be an open and multi-faith service. The service will be run by our own District Chaplain with help and support from other Faith Leaders from Croydon. On this special occasion we will be inviting the Mayor of Croydon and Croydon MP’s to lay a Wreath as will a Wreath by laid on behalf of the District. We will also be seeking two members from our Group to lay poppies in remembrance. We will also be seeking one flag bearer – one only for the group.  The flags will be lowered during the service when we prepare to observe a moment of silence and a lone bugler will play the ‘Last Post’. Please let your Section Leader know if you wish to attend.Share this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Google+ (Opens in new window)Click to email this to a friend (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)MoreClick to share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)Click to share on Tumblr (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)
